Is this really a solution? Who would do the search and why? How would anyone know what to search for? Not to mention the very basic question - does anyone teach how to search the web? Or more importantly - self teaching techniques?
The solution I was implying here is that there is enough free open source content and courseware out there that buying these textbooks is unnecessary. I showed these sources in a Google search to imply that if those sources are not enough that the Internet itself could be a textbook. One would hope that a qualified teacher would not need a textbook to dictate course curriculum. As for your question about teaching how to search, I think this would provide an answer to that dilema as well.
I agree with your textbook assessment, text books are unnecessary, packaged curriculum is certainly unnecessary. Teachers should be able to pull from a variety of sources and create their own "textbooks" that were uniquely put together for the students in their classroom. It might (and should) change every year.
