My hope with this survey is that if I get a comprehensive look at school and district technology policies and compare them to other demographic data that we might be able to spot trends and correlations. Weekly Tech Tip - Data Mining (results of a technology survey given to 7-12 students)

This week's tech tip is not so much a tip but rather a report. Earlier this week all students grades 7-12 at Goodhue Schools took a survey about their own personal computer use, what they have access to at home, and their attitudes toward school (click here if you would like to see a copy of the survey questions). The survey produced some interesting results that should help us to make informed decisions regarding technology policy, purchases, and instruction. Please take a moment to look over these results. What is Technology?

A couple years ago, in one of my graduate school classes, I was assigned a paper where we were supposed to find and explain a metaphor for technology. In that paper I said that, "Technology is a Stick." I had in mind the opening scene to 2001 A Space Odyssey where the primitive man touches the monolith then begins using tools. My thinking at the time was that technology was a tool. However, I have been rethinking this lately and have come to a different conclusion.

Alan Kay says that technology is anything that was invented after you were born. This definition plays right into the same concept I held two years ago when I wrote that technology is a stick. Both of these definitions narrow the definition to objects (i.e. Computer, Cell Phone, Particle Collider, etc.). This definition is very practical and is easy to identify with. Shifting the onus of the term to the object removes individuals of necessary ownership of what truly lies within the term. It is empowering to say that you, your school, your town, your interest group, your professional organization, your country, etc. "has the technology." But does possessing tools constitute the possession of technology?

My dogs spend most of their time in my garage. In my garage I have numerous power tools, hand tools, an old computer, and a few machines (lawn mower, snow blower, etc.). According to the stick metaphor my dogs possess the technology to build pretty much anything. Do my dogs really possess this technology? I think not.

I have to admit that my summer indulgence were the TED Talks and taking my dogs on long evenings. Every week I would upload a new batch of talks to my iPod Nano and watch them on the go while exercising my dogs. Thus the way I have framed this idea. From these talks my mind has contracted quite a variety of memes and I think I finally have a definitive understanding of what technology really is.

When a foreign country says they possess the technology to build a nuclear weapon I don't think they mean that they have the materials. What they have is the knowledge and understanding needed to build one. And with this example I think I have solved the definition/metaphor problem. Technology is a meme, an idea, an understanding.

If technology is a meme then it can never really die or be destroyed. The only way we can loose our technology is if we forget how it works or how to use it. I think this notion helps explain a lot of behavior we see in schools. Try as we will, if a our students find a technology real useful they will find a way to use it even if it is banned or there are rules excluding its use. It also gets at the heart of a lot of tensions that can be observed between teachers and their students or one generation vs. another. It explains what is really missing from the digital native/digital immigrant depictions.

Technophobia is not the fear of new tools but rather the fear of not understanding. There is a nervousness that exists when those in a learning environment who are supposed to be subordinates are empowered with knowledge and understanding that those in authority positions lack. What it boils down to is technophobia is fear of loosing authority. It is not the tools that make the digital immigrant different from the digital native, it is the understanding of how they work and how they can be applied or the eagerness to learn new ways of understanding that makes this distinction. When we define technology as a tool we can say we have it but not know how it works or how to use it and we can easily just put it aside. If we see not the tool but the knowledge and understanding as the technology then for us to say we possess it means we must understand it. This is especially troubling in the field of education because educators are supposed to be inquisitive and celebrate knowledge, ideas, and understanding.

My job title at my full-time job is, "Technology Integration Curriculum Specialist." I am starting to see this as a bit of a misnomer given my new concept of what technology is. What I sense is expected of me by the educators I work with is that I am here to help them to bring new tools into their classroom and that is currently an accurate portrayal of what I do. However, am I integrating technology or am I integrating tools? If I were really to help teachers integrate technology my role should go beyond the tools and address understanding both of ideas and how they can be applied. This kind of integration transcends the tools and is much more about pedagogy than technical knowledge. That said, I still like playing around with new tools.

I have been busy this summer. Our district started to implement a project I put together that teaches technology and technology integration to teachers online. Now, there are products out there like InfoSource that do this but our program is outcome based and follows a method that hopefully will align with what teachers need to do to prepare curriculum, activities, etc. for their practice. Techno Lust



I have been wrestling lately with the topic of technology over indulgence. Do we really always need the latest and greatest? At what point does a technology reach its point of maximum potential? Do I really need a pocket knife with 36 different blades, a place to hold a tooth pick, and silverware? At what point do we look at our televisions and say, "Do I really need 900 channels? I never watch more than 10 of them." At what point do we say, "This latest version of Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, Windows, etc has cool features but I still only use the ones my old version had." Do we really need a faster processor when a Pentium 4 still does everything I NEED it to do? Does our school really need to have SMARTboards in EVERY classroom? Should we spend our money on one totally awesome gadget with ten million incredible features that also does your laundry for you and tells you when to use the rest room or could we take that gadget money and buy 5 slightly inferior products that do all that but only has nine million incredible features?


Sure, if I worked at Pixar and had the task of rendering the next blockbuster animated feature and had to include special effects that are more advanced than the last film I think I would take the one machine that folds laundry for me but I work in a school district. Our processing needs will never rival those of power users that exist in big business. Often the skills necessary to operate and utilize those obscure power options in most commercial software require study of the software beyond k-12 education. In fact, if we get too much into teaching kids how to utilize these power features we risk neglecting our primary goal as k-12 educators. Is our goal to teach technology or use technology to teach content? If our goal is to teach technology maybe we should invest in the high power machine and superfluous commercial software. However, we will have to have students work in large groups and have to find something else for them to do while others in the class have their turn at the nice machine. If, however, we are trying to utilize technology to better teach content our needs are better served with more simple solutions.


Enter open source and online apps. I have been playing around this year with both of these kids of applications and have fallen in love with both. I think they are perfect for education, at least k-12 education. Most open source software nearly mimics the look, feel, and functionality of commercial brand counterparts and whatever tech skills are necessary to operate one platform are also necessary to operate the other so skills are transferable. Online apps. answer another problem that I see all the time in schools. That problem is compatibility. If we encourage our students to use online apps. for their assignments then it won't matter what kind of machine they are using, everything is compatible. My goal is never again to hear, "I can't show you my PowerPoint because your version is incompatible with the one I have at home." or, "I couldn't work on my PowerPoint at home because I couldn't open the file."


If we decide not to renew our licenses with Microsoft, Adobe, and other commercial software providers we can save tons of money to reinvest in our network and hardware. If we replace it with a fully functioning, easy to use platform we can focus more on how it can be used to make learning reading, writing, science, art, social studies, math, physical education, etc. more engaging, authentic, and learner centered. We take that saved money and invest it in hardware that will serve our needs, not hardware that far exceeds our needs and we will be happy. I think I choose to do my laundry myself.

Online Operating Systems


In the March 2008 issue of PC Magazine there is a great article, "The Best Free Software." In that article they list, among many other things, free online operating systems. I spent a little bit of time exploring some of these programs. The first they list, ajaxWindows crashed my browser when I tried to use it. The second I used, eyeOS, worked well and seemed simple to use but was not all that versatile. The third one I used, Glide, sparked some excitement for me. This tool, while similar to Google Docs & Spreadsheets, is much flashier. It's graphic interface is very user friendly. Most interesting is how Glide seems to merge basic elements of an operating system with the collaborative potential of web 2.0 tools like YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, del.icio.us, and online office programs. The 2gb storage space they give you free makes Glide a nice service for anytime, anywhere computing. The other nice feature that is present with Glide that is not readily present on other similar programs is the ease of creating websites with editable CSS templates. I can definitely see how this could evolve over the next five years into what the Horizon Report talks about when they say that social operating systems will greatly influence education in the future.

Croquet



I just learned of this new open source virtual world. It is called Croquet and in the next few weeks I definitely have to give this platform a whirl. If Croquet is as easy to use as this video suggests it might just be the perfect virtual world app for education (I am making this prediction prematurely I know). I especially like the ability to broadcast your webcam image over the top of your avatar and how the program appears to display the 2d web within the world(s).

Goodhue Techspo - Rescheduled

In January I posted that Goodhue Public School would be holding a Technology Expo at the end of the month. Due to a makeup day that event had to be postponed. It is now scheduled for February 18th. All are welcome to attend (teachers, administrators, parents, community members, etc.). I extend this invitation to anyone, especially teachers in schools in SE Minnesota. Efficiency!

As a technology curriculum integration specialist a large part of my job is locating and sharing online resources with teachers in my district. While I enjoy this task immensely I don't enjoy the process I have had to go through to document this process. Today I finished setting up a system that I hope will eliminate the the cumbersome part of this task, make my work more productive, and increase my communication with teachers.

What I have done is combine the web 2.0 tools of del.icio.us, FeedBlendr, and FeedBurner in such a way that when I tag a link it automatically gets sent to the appropriate teacher in an email.

The reason my searching was cumbersome before was to do this I would have to first copy the link, paste it in an email, address that email, send it, then login to our website, navigate to my curricular links page, add the link there in the correct location, then publish the page. If there was more than one link I wanted to post I would have to do these steps multiple times. In all, I had 10 steps I had to go through for each link I wanted to share and archive. Now, I only have two steps: tag and save.

Here is how I did it:
  1. set up a del.icio.us account
  2. invented unique tags for each subject area and grade level that I would normally find sites for
  3. imported all my bookmarks and favorites as well as those of teachers in the district and tagged their links according to my tagging system
  4. used FeedBlendr to combine del.icio.us feeds of related tags so each teacher can receive in one feed all the links I find relevant to them




  5. Converted the feed to an email with FeedBurner email (located in the "publish" tab on Feedburner)
  6. Created a page on our school website for teachers to subscribe to these emails - I also subscribed all teachers to the Feedblendr feeds using their Bloglines accounts but most teachers still prefer to use email.
  7. I also changed the subfolders on my "curricular links" page to link to relevant tags in my del.icio.us account. This makes for an organized way of locating my archived links.
Next steps:
  1. On my next round of individual teacher meetings I will show each teacher the subscription site and have each one subscribe the the feeds that will be of most use to them.
  2. Search del.icio.us for other educators who have active accounts and start tagging their links
  3. Align these links with state and national standards.

del.icio.us - A Can of Worms?


This past summer I created an account with del.icio.us. After exploring it for just a few minutes I decided this tool deserved far more of my time and attention than I had at that moment and vowed to return to it at a later time when I could devote myself to learning and understanding this versatile tool.

I finally have had some time this week to revisit del.icio.us and give it the attention it deserves. This was partly fueled by the fact that I have had few teachers asking me about del.icio.us and partly due to my frustration of not having access to links that are stored on my home computer while I am at work.

Now, I own two of my own laptops and have one laptop provided to me by my employer. On each of these machines I have links stored as bookmarks in Firefox and as favorites in Explorer. That means that if I want to find something that I remember bookmarking or adding to my favorites I sometimes have to look six different places. All the more reason to take a closer look at del.icio.us.

The first thing I did was import my links from each of these six locations. This amounted to a whopping 800 links that I then had to sort, tag, decide if I want to share, delete, bundle, etc. It quickly became clear that my approach to using del.icio.us opened a digital can of worms. After doing this I recommend to anyone setting up an account not to take the route I did. Be selective with which links you upload. Many of these links were dead. Many of the links were ones my family added. It would have been much cleaner had I been judicious about which links I imported.

After I set up my account I decided to see what fish I could catch with this can of worms. Within very little time I was able to locate del.icio.us accounts of other education technology people whom I know and respect. This proved to be a huge eye opener. At the same time, I was preparing for a brief training session on RSS. For my staff training sessions I almost always set up a wiki with instructional content such as embedded videos and related links. I had my own four links I was going to share but thought it would be much better if this wiki contained more stuff for those staff members who want to learn more on their own. Using my new network of del.icio.us users, as well as everyone else who uses del.icio.us. I was able to quickly find an additional five links that I thought were valuable enough to share with the staff. Had I performed this search on Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, Ask Jeeves, or any other search engine I probably would not have found as many quality links directly related to the topic I was interested in. Now that I have my account set up I am sure it is going to become part of my daily routine.

Some educational application thoughts: I recently set up Bloglines accounts for all the teachers in our school district and subscribed teachers to blogs and news sites related to their content areas. I did this partly to prepare teachers for what lies ahead with the evolution of web 2.0 and web 3.0 applications and what will be needed to process student information and keep up to date with professional development. So far I am not sure how many teachers have been actively using their accounts but I know some are. What if we set up del.icio.us accounts for each teacher to share links? With del.icio.us you can also burn an RSS feed of your recent links. Since each teacher already has a Bloglines account, I could subscribe them to a feed of my account. When I find links I want to share with them all I would have to do is tag them on my account and they would be sent to them in their aggregator.

Ideas for use with students: A teacher could set up a del.icio.us account for their class. They could require all students create accounts too. The teacher and students could place each other in their personal network. Then, teachers could require students to tag resources they find with the class name or class number. Teachers could also use this as a way of disseminating curriculum to students. Teachers could place links to all curriculum aligned websites and web resources on their accounts and tag them with the course name and the unit number. Students would have to browse the teacher's account to locate information. This would make curriculum very fluid. Students creating and publishing web content could tag it with a unique tag. Collaborations could be formed with students from other schools who could tag information the same way. A search on del.icio.us for this unique search term would return results from all collaborators.

SEMTEC - Techspo - Web 2.0 - a roundtable discussion: What is it and how is it working in your schools?

This session started with the Machine is Us/ing Us video by Mike Wesch. Most of those in attendance are tech coordinators from area schools (9 people total), two of us deal specifically with instructional technology.

SEMTEC - Techspo - Using Signage/Distributed Video in Your School

This was a vendor presentation so some bias definitely present. My thoughts are in italics.

With streaming video with AlphaVideo:
  • faster load time
  • greater control over media distribution
  • limited by avialable network bandwidth
  • allows for live broadcasts
  • requires a streaming server
  • need - video/audio source, encoder, network connection, and a streaming server

Digital cable comes to your house in MPEG format (i did not know this).

To multi stream in a building you need Windows 2003 Enterprise Server, to stream on the web you just need a standard Windows 2003 Server.

Podcasting is not streaming. Files are transferred from server to client. Users can subscribe through syndication methods (RSS). A streaming server is not necessary, only a web server is needed.

DRM:

  • Digital Rights Management
  • Controls who can view content
  • Controls how they can view content
  • Easy to implement, but can be expensive

Unicast vs. Multicast

  • Refers to the connection made between client and server
  • Unicast: every client has an individual connection
  • Multicast: data stays in a single stream until splitting is absolutely necessary
  • Multicast is not possible over the internet
  • Multicast must be properly implemented on any network, or multicast "storms" can disrupt the network.
  • Implementing multicast requires the cooperation of I.T.

LAN vs Internet

Belvidere - kind of like TiVo but on the PC. Connects PC to video monitor and integrates United Streaming.

The reasons these guys are giving for implementing their product seem to stem around two different main ideas: 1. Ease of use and 2. Bandwidth. I can't argue with their first point but is the first point really worth the dollars when there are free services that do the same things and don't eat up bandwidth: YouTube, Ustreamtv, etc. These services allow you to get your message out there, either prerecorded or live, without eating up your own bandwidth. It seems the big issue is ease of use.

SEMTEC - Techspo - Video Conferencing witin SEMNET

Today I am attending the first annual SEMTEC Techspo at Stewartville HS in Stewartville, MN. Today I will be posting 5-6 entries about this event. The following are my notes from the first session I attended on Video Conferencing within SEMNET by Jen Hegna (tech coordinator) from Byron, MN (my own comments in italics):

  • This technology allows classrooms to connect with other classrooms via digital video.
  • It allows you to share not only video from a camera but also computer or video screens.
  • It appears you connect via phone calls much like Skype
  • ASL so far has been the fastest growing and most popular video classes.
  • Professional development - teachers can take classes from UofM or St. Cloud State in the evenings
  • Socrates started in 1984 - Socrates is a network of video conferencing schools that began in northern MN.
  • 4 schools can share an account
  • They are looking at integrating streaming technology so it can be used on screen in a lab setting.
  • SEMNET has not yet started offering classes
  • Could be hooked up to LCD projector and viewed on the SMARTboard. Very mobile, unlike ITV.
  • Contact OET to hook up.
  • I don't see the advantage to this as opposed to using a free service like Skype other than the ability to share VHS or DVD.
  • I think this technology is best left to other districts to develop before Goodhue jumps on board. I don't think it is cost effective for us right now.

  • The advantage to this over Skype is quality of service. Skype can be slow if the network bandwidth is bogged down.
  • The technology is the easy part - the hard part is making the connections and establishing the collaborations.

Edusim3d - New Virtual World for your SMARTbaord

I spent a little bit of time playing around with this new program today called Edusim3d. It is a virtual world platform that is intended for use in front of a classroom on an interactive whiteboard. I have barely scratched the surface with this tool. According to the website it has only been available for one week. You have to register for a free account to be able to download Edusim3d and I would quantify the download and installation as moderately difficult but once you have it installed it appears pretty easy to navigate and build. The coolest feature I played with is the paint program. It lets you freehand drawings that are turned into 3d objects in the environment. AP US History at Goodhue High School - Podcasting & Class Wiki

I have been wanting to blog about this project for some time but thought it would be best to wait until there was substantial student work to publicize it. Josh Grant, our AP US History teacher, came to me at the beginning of the school year and asked me if there was a way we could use wikis or podcasting to encourage his students to do more review of their notes. We discussed the idea for a while and decided to start with the podcasting idea first.

Our first attempt was something of a failure. I created a one page instruction sheet that students could use that explained how to record their voice using Audacity and then how to login to our website and upload it. The instructional activity was each student would be assigned a chapter and would take turns recording their chapter summaries. To kick this off I visited his class and went through the procedure with his students. A couple weeks later Mr. Grant approached me with a problem. Evidently six steps was too much to remember for students who did not have to record their podcast until weeks later. About the same time he approached me with this problem I learned about Gabcast from reviewing podcast presentations from the K-12 Online Conference.

The next day we set up a Gabcast channel for his AP US History students and linked it to the school website along with instructions on how to record a podcast with Gabcast. If you are not familiar with Gabcast it is a free service that allows you to record podcasts over the telephone. Students call a toll-free phone number, enter a channel number and four digit password, then have up to an hour to record their podcast. We demonstrated this tool to his class and let them play around with it. Then the podcasts started coming in. This is a still a work in progress as Mr. Grant's students will be using this tool all year but if you want to listen to some of these podcasts (or use them to cram for the AP exam yourself) you can find them at: http://www.gabcast.com/index.php?a=episodes&id=14547. This tool does two things for Mr. Grant's students:




  1. It forces them to review their notes for the chapters they are assigned.

  2. Students can download these files to an iPod or MP3 player to help them prep for the AP exam in the spring.




Our second initiative was a master class notes wiki. For this assignment we set up a free wiki with PBWiki, set up blank pages for each chapter, then assigned students a chapter to record their notes. A second student was assigned the same chapter for revisions, a third student was assigned the chapter for inclusion of hyperlinks to related online content, and a fourth student was assigned the chapter for inclusion of related digital media (pictures, videos, etc.). Each student was assigned each task on at least two different chapters (different than the chapter they were assigned in the podcasting assignment). Students are then assessed on the number and quality of posts on the wiki. This assignment forces students to review their notes, addresses the needs of visual learners, provides a tool for students to use who have to miss a class, encourages them to consult other sources, and forces them again to review their notes, and review their notes, and review their notes. So, how does a teacher track all this online activity without going mad? We set up an RSS aggregator for Mr. Grant to use to keep track of all postings to both the Gabcast channel and the wiki. We used Bloglines since I had already begun a school wide initiative using this tool. With Bloglines Mr. Grant is immediately notified when a new post is published on either of these sites and can review it for appropriateness, quality, and to give credit to the student publishing the post. Hopefully all this pays off in the spring when these students take their exam.

Minneapolis and St. Paul on Google Street View

Earlier this fall I blogged about Google Street view. Recently I learned they added Minneapolis and St. Paul to the list of cities with this function. Since I first learned of this feature in Google Maps this fall every time revisit the site it seems they have added more cities. I wonder how long before they have captured the whole world.

Collaborative Storytelling

About a month ago our 5th graders started a collaborative project with a school 100 miles away. They have been taking turns writing a story using 21classes. This is not simply a story though. We have framed this project for the students as a game. Each student is paired with a student from their class. While one student is writing the other is out taking a picture. The student whose turn it is to write has to read all the blog posts in the story and find a way to incorporate the last picture added into the story. When they are finished they post the photo their partner took for the next group to write about. Their photography goal is to find a picture that the next group will struggle with finding a way to incorporate into the story. I predicted that this would force the students to be more creative and ultimately come up with more interesting stories. This project also promotes reading because to do the assignment they have to read the whole story that has been written so far. This project has, from what I observed, increased the engagement level of all students involved at both schools. Seeing that this has been successful in its trial run our next goal is to do this project, perhaps next year, with more than one school and hopefully on a global scale. Such a project could potentially involve as many as ten different schools granted that half are from Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia, and the other half are from the Americas.
