Seems right now this is most pertinent for me in the acceptance of online blogging and open access journals as legitimate places to publish and cite as credible as opposed to peer-reviewed journals. Problem is, as Jon Becker points out, the peer-reviewed walls of academia tend to been echo chambers. Who reads them? If I have an idea to spread am I better off publishing it in a journal that is likely going to be read only by a handful of established intellectuals or better off publishing it in an open format accessible to all?
