"our broader obligation is to address what writer Martin Amis described as Americans' chronic 'deficit of empathy for the sufferings of people far away.' Schools should help children locate themselves in widening circles of care that extend beyond self, beyond country, to all humanity." Kohn
I have to say, one thing 9/11 seems to have done is bring more awareness and empathy to American people. We still have far far to go but today there does seem to be a broader awareness in the general population of what goes on abroad and how it affects them. Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and other social media tools seem to deserve some credit for this as well. Most Americans still have blinders on but what I observe today is far better than what I noticed 11 years ago when I came back from five months studying abroad. At that time our selective closed culture was overwhelmingly apparent.
